Joske Slabbers (Ireland)

“I started my EVS in DZMP/Luksuz produkcija in 2005, 18 years old, fresh out of school, first time living away from home… and it was brilliant! Definitely one of the best experiences of my life. I only had very limited experience in the film when I started, having only been involved in the making of one short film previously, so I learned a lot during my EVS. The DZMP/Luksuz crew was the main reason that I had such a great time in Krško. They were very supportive and also good fun and we, EVS volunteers, were always included and invited to different events. I got to see a lot of Slovenia in my year as an EVS volunteer and even got to travel to different surrounding countries (Italy, Austria, Croatia, Serbia) for film festivals, concerts, and other cultural events.

One of the things I enjoyed most was that when making videos about local and national events/projects, we got a chance to be in contact with the community and in my experience, Slovenian people are some of the nicest, most helpful, and hospitable people I’ve ever met. After doing my EVS, I went to study film and I’m now working as a technical assistant for audio-visual production in a college in Ireland. I have been back to Slovenia many times and I am still in regular contact with the Luksuz crew. I have been bringing different groups of young filmmakers from Ireland to their summer documentary workshops for many years now and they all love it. If you are thinking of doing EVS, I would say do it! And do it in DZPM/Luksuz if you can. I have met many EVS volunteers over the years and when you get a good organization/project where you are needed and can actually contribute, it will be an amazing experience. Good projects are not always easy to find… and I would say this one is not just good, it’s really great.”
